The Rocca Maggiore castle was built not only in a militarily strategic location, but at one of the most picturesque spots in Umbria Italy.  To the west, is the town of Assisi and the agriculturally rich plains.  To the east, are the mountains of Umbria - a natural barrier against hostile invaders.
