The San Francesco Basilica consists of an upper church, lower church and a tall bell tower. A large grassy area stretches out in front of the main entrance (i.e. the upper courtyard). There is also a picturesque lower courtyard located off to the left.
The basilica is surrounded on three sides by a set of building that were once used to house the monks that worked in the church. Thousands of pilgrims visit Assisi each year to visit this world-famous basilica.
